New Teeth In A Day? Maybe – Maybe Not

Today there are super centers for everything you could possibly want or need! Food, furniture, automobiles and believe it or not, even Dental Implants! These are those places that advertise “New Teeth In One Day”. Are you a little leery in getting something as important to your health and well being taken care of in a super center setting? Well maybe you should be.

The bone where teeth are missing will deteriorate. However, here at Berkshire Dental Group, we can preserve that with dental implants. Dental Implants are applied to replace any of your missing original teeth. We will place the implant in the root of the missing tooth to give it a permanent foundation. When then install a replacement crown on the tooth that allows you to eat in comfort. In time, the bone and implant will form a strong bond.

The “New Teeth In A Day” procedure is not recommended for those who have been wearing dentures. Here at Berkshire Dental Group, we strongly suggest the traditional Dental Implant procedure. It is not unusual for patients to require bone grafting for some patients to get the best esthetics and functionality.

Even those who have not worn dentures or have significant loss of bone, those Super Centers are still not the best way to go. Any trained and equipment dentist can provide the surgical procedure and install your temporary replacements in one day. However if done correctly and thoroughly, the diagnostics can take more time and the treatment plan can take several weeks.

What these Super Centers don’t include in their advertising is that the final replacement teeth may take up to 8 months and to fit your final prosthesis usually comes at an extra charge.

A common concern for patients of Berkshire Dental Group is if they will be without any teeth while their Dental Implants are being created. Certainly not! The technology we have today gives us the ability to create substitute teeth that will feel, look and provide the same as your natural teeth.

If your checkup has given us indication that you are in need of a Dental Implant, talk to us at Berkshire Dental Group about the different options of Dental Implants that you may be a candidate for.

Just for the record though, the success rate for those “New Teeth In A Day” Super Centers, hasn’t been documented as high the traditional Dental Implant procedure.

Did You Wash Behind Your Ears?

Do you wash behind your ears, between your toes and under your arms? Probably so because you know that’s where dirt, odor and sweat accumulate, right? Well the same goes for flossing your teeth. There are places where food gets lodged and your toothbrush can’t reach.

There are so many excuses that people give us at Berkshire Dental Group for not flossing. From as basic and logical sounding that their hands don’t fit in their mouth or it makes their gums bleed to as silly as it splashes food specks on the mirror.

Can you just imagine how nasty smelling you would get if you didn’t wash behind your ears, between your toes or under your armpits? It’s just gross thinking about it! Well, when you don’t get that food out in-between your teeth, there’s nasty bacteria and germs left there to build up and start causing problems, like cavities and gum disease. Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean there isn’t food there either.

Even though you keep your regular appointment with us at Berkshire Dental Group doesn’t give you a freebie on not flossing either! We’re pretty certain that you are eating during the 6 months between your check ups and cleaning visits here, so that means that food is getting left behind. Just because you’ve gone a couple of years cavity free doesn’t mean there is some invisible barrier around and in-between your teeth. That daily flossing is just as important as daily brushing if not more important.

Remember that last dental cleaning you had here at Berkshire Dental Group? Did it seem that the Dental Hygienist had a hard time getting in-between your teeth with the floss and maybe you ended up with bleeding gums? Most likely, the Dental Hygienist gave you lots of floss samples and a repeated reminder that you need to floss more often.

While your gums and teeth feel great right after your visit with us at Berkshire Dental Group, things can take a turn for the worse quick. When you don’t floss regularly with your brushing, an alternative that is not only painful but expensive is a deep cleaning. When we find plaque under the gum line, a deep cleaning is the next step. A deep cleaning consist of the Dental Hygienist scraping the plaque off the root of your teeth. This is invasive and not to mention uncomfortable for most people.

To avoid the need for a deep cleaning, make the commitment right now to floss every day along with brushing, twice a day. You can floss after lunch when you excuse yourself to the restroom after eating and then again at night before you go to bed. Brushing and flossing before bed will make sure that nasty bacteria isn’t left behind to grow and create problems while you sleep.

Make sure you are doing you part of the team work to keep your teeth healthy and your smile bright! Brush, floss and keep those appointments on schedule here at Berkshire Dental Group. The most dental experience under one roof is right here for you!

The Unknown Culprits That Cause Cavities

We can’t stress it enough at Berkshire Dental Group the importance of brushing and flossing and maintaining a good dental hygiene routine. Still, we read over an over how tooth decay is still occurring for in children and adults both. Recent studies have shown that children in the age range of two to eleven, over 40 percent dental issues such as cavities with over 20 percent being untreated. Those numbers are even worse when it comes to adults! Sadly, much of the population doesn’t have dental insurance, but you can keep tooth decay at bay by watching out for cavity culprits that you may not realize were present.

All kids love chewable vitamins! They come in fun shapes and delicious flavors that area almost like candy. What many parents don’t realize, they are just as harmful to their child’s dental care as eating candy. Even the vitamins labeled as “sugarless” are fueled with cavity causing bacteria. While vitamins are helpful and good for your child’s over all health, the residue sits on the teeth after your child eats them and can start the cavity building. Berkshire Dental Group recommends to our patients to have your child brush thoroughly after taking their vitamins.

Your child is sick and has developed a cough. Naturally, you want to quieten that cough so they can sleep. What you may or may not realize is that cough syrup is full of sweeteners that build germs. Those germs start decaying the teeth and cavities begin. At night, while your child sleeps, their mouth dries out leaving little protection for their teeth. Berkshire Dental Group recommends have your child brush their teeth thoroughly before giving them their medicine then give them a piece of quick-dissolving candy that contains xylitol afterward. Xylitol protects the teeth and decreases the chance for bacteria to remain behind on the teeth.

Germs eat what you eat. Pretty gross sounding isn’t it? Further more, germs cause cavities and are a threat to your dental health. While germs that cause tooth decay aren’t eating your teeth, they are eating what you are eating and if you are a carb eater, they really love carbs too! From the carbs that germs consume, they create acid and acid eats on your teeth allowing cavities. For children, from infancy to the age of two, these germs are at their most contagious. As kids get older, their bodies are better able to fend off that bacteria that causes cavities.

Drinking bottle water that is non-fluoridated instead of fluoridated tap water doesn’t directly cause cavities, but it has been proven in studies that flouride in your drinking water protects the crown of your teeth, especially in children as their teeth are developing. Filtered water is safe and the fluoride isn’t removed by the filters, however, bottled water are for the most part, unfluoridated.

Keep in mind also that you can get too much fluoride. Over fluoride can cause discoloration of the teeth and is can be harmful for your bones as well. If your home has fluoridated water, take caution with young children when brushing their teeth so they aren’t swallowing fluoridated toothpaste. Check the infant formula you use for how much fluoride it contains and as your baby’s physician on how to mix it with water.

New mothers are always encouraged to breast feed, however, what they aren’t told is that breast-fed babies, although small, has a higher rate of tooth decay than those that are given cow’s milk. Regardless breast-fed or bottle-fed, Berkshire Dental Group strongly recommends not putting your child to bed with a bottle of either type of milk, juice or sugar water. When liquid sits on their teeth, it causes tooth decay. Since babies can’t swallow as good laying down, letting them sleep with anything but plain water is a cavity culprit. Check with your pediatrician on how long nursing babies should be allowed to suck on the breast too. Too long can be damaging for their teeth.

Colas, Lemonade and Sports Drinks, as we we have covered in this blog before, are not good for your teeth. Not only are they calorie-filled and bad fro the waist line, but they are full of sugar and bad for your dental health. Not to mention they have citric acid that when it is combined with the high content of sugar, even more acid is created by those germs we mentioned earlier. The acid and sugar combined with the germs destroy the structure of your teeth. While you may feel you better off drinking diet drinks, think again. They still have a high acid content that will erode your teeth all the same and stain them.

Berkshire Dental Group isn’t telling you not to give your children cough syrups or vitamins, they are both essential in the care of children. Our bodies need carbs too. We also know you can’t just drink milk and water the rest of your life either, we all need a little variety. Just be cautious with what you consume. Brush, floss and keep regular appointments with us at Berkshire Dental Group for your cleanings and check ups. As a team of two, we can fight off those cavity causing culprits together for you or you children.

Do You Have An Athletic Smile?

Although the staff at Berkshire Dental Group knew this to be so already, recent research and studies have only confirmed it. Results presented show a clear and unarguable determination that sport drinks can cause tooth damage. Although they furnish athletes with essential electrolytes and fluids, they also can cause damage to dental enamel that may be irreparable in the end compromise our overall dental health.

These findings are supported by the fact that the high content of acid and sugars in sports drinks, those who consume these sports drinks will experience three to eleven more times worse than harm caused by cola-based drinks. The level of citric acid in these sports drinks caused substantial corrosion of teeth in comparison to water. Where bacteria is the cause of tooth decay, tooth erosion comes from chemical attack not bacteria.

Saliva assists to neutralize the acids in our mouth naturally which helps reduce tooth decay. When we are dehydrated or thirsty, our saliva level is lower than usual. So even if the athletic person that has a strict regiment of brushing and flossing, but consume sports drinks are still at risk of tooth erosion.

Therefore, athletes and anyone that consumes sports beverages are encouraged to be careful when we go to the fridge for a drink. It is wise to consume sports drinks only to rehydrate during rigorous athletic activity, but wiser to drink plain water.

So before your summer sports starts up, for you or your child, make your appointment with us at Berkshire Dental Group and make sure your dental needs are taken care first. Then when you plunge into your summer activities, take caution in your form of hydration! And when summer is over, it will be time for your next check up – we’ll be here waiting for you and ready to keep that bright smile bright and healthy!

A Partnership You Don’t Want : Rheumatoid Arthritis and Gum Disease

Brushing, flossing, and keeping your appointments with Berkshire Dental Group are important for everyone. For patients that suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis though, it is even more crucial. A recent study has been published shows that those with RA are eight times more apt to experience an inflammatory condition known as gum disease.

Inflammation is a defensive immune system reaction to substances like bacteria and viruses. An overactive immune system is called Rheumatoid Arthritis which mistakenly triggers inflammation even though there isn’t any bacteria or viruses detected. Thus inflammation happens and the joints become painful, stiff and swollen.

Experts aren’t sure exactly just how gum disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis are connected, but both of these diseases have inflammation. Some experts believe that the immune system is induced by mouth infection and inflammation and there by a chain of events are started where inflammation originates at the site of joints or arthritis.

With these recent studies in mind, some doctors feel that by curbing inflammation by way of better dental care could reduce incidences and less the severity of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Results from another study there was evidence that when patients with a critical rheumatoid arthritis and gum disease, not only did the severity of the RA lessen, but their gum disease cleared up as well.

Gum disease can range from swollen, tender gums of gingivitis to more serious disease such as periodontitis when the inflammation affects the bone that supports the teeth and the tissue surrounding the teeth. Some patients with RA have been known to develop an autoimmune disease of the glands, called Sjogren’s syndrome, which causes dry mouth and increased tooth decay.

By patients with gingivitis keeping their twice a year cleanings at Berkshire Dental Group and a good at home dental regiment, the disease can be reversed. When a patient is diagnosed with periodontal disease, a more severe gum disease, more extensive treatment is required. For Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, maintaining good oral hygiene at home can be difficult. Since the joints in their hands are affected by the disease, brushing and flossing can be difficult.

Berkshire Dental Group follows The American Dental Association suggestions for their patients with RA such as redesign their toothbrush by adding a tennis ball or bicycle handle to the end, this will allow them to have a better grip. When it comes to flossing, try different types of floss such as floss holders, floss picks, or threaders. Using toothpaste in a pump instead of a tube is easier for RA patients and when choosing a mouthwash, select one that has fluoride to help protect your teeth from cavities.

By all means, if you use any form of tobacco, stop immediately when you have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis or gum disease. Whether or not you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, all our patients at Berkshire Dental Group are encouraged to avoid this habit as it is a big factor in the development of gum disease. For patients with RA, it can interfere with your treatments as well.

Once you have been diagnosed to have Rheumatoid Arthritis by your medical doctor, let us know at Berkshire Dental Group. We can work with you by scheduling shorter visits in the chair and set them later in the day , as most RA patients joints loosen up as the day progresses. Don’t be afraid to request a leg or neck pillow to give you better support and make the sitting in the chair more comfortable.

For everyone, regular visits to us at Berkshire Dental Group are important. For those patients that have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis though, it’s even more important to keep your appointments. Your beautiful smile is our number one priority!

They’ re Just Baby Teeth – Right?

Congratulations! You have started out on the right foot bringing your child in to Berkshire Dental Group and getting them started with good routine and regular dental care. You may have noticed that they have some teeth coming in crooked, or they have a cavity, maybe a cracked or chipped tooth. After their examination, the doctors here at Berkshire Dental Group have presented a dental treatment plan to correct and repair those teeth.

Your first reaction may be that since they baby teeth, are they all that important to fix? Well, yes, maybe even more so now! Your child’s baby teeth hold a place for their permanent teeth providing guidance as they start coming in. This means that if your youngster’s baby teeth are coming in crooked, or one falls out and the others nearby drift into the space left by it, that the adult teeth will grow in in the wrong position. If your child loses a tooth sooner than they should, call us a Berkshire Dental Group immediately and we will fit your child for a space maintainer that will keep their other teeth from drifting into the space that is other adult teeth will need.

Too often, a parent doesn’t realize that when a baby tooth has a cavity, chances are very likely that the adult tooth that comes in will also be prone to have a cavity as well. Teeth with cavities should be cared for immediately. First of all, you don’t want to see your child in pain and should the decayed too become abscess, your child could end up in the hospital.

Not only do baby teeth provide the position guidance of permanent teeth, but they are also needed for your child’s speech to develop as well. Healthy, properly aligned baby teeth are important for young children to form words and talk clearly enough to be understood.

Chipped, cracked, crooked or decayed teeth will affect your child’s smile as well as their confidence and sense of self-esteem. When your child’s chewing is hampered by poor teeth, it affects their nutrition intake as well.

Fix any issues they have with their baby teeth growing in incorrectly, don’t make the mistake that many parents have and ignore their baby teeth. Do everything you can to prevent cavities early on by limiting sugary snacks and teaching them good dental hygiene that includes brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups at Berkshire Dental Group.

Berkshire Dental group is here to help you ensure that your child’s baby teeth are healthy and lead into healthy permanent teeth so they will have that beautiful, healthy smile you always pictured them having.

But Mom! Everyone Else Has Their Tongue Pierced!

Summertime for many teens is a time of transformation, and nobody knows that better than us here at Berkshire Dental Group. They are graduating from middle school to high school or maybe even moving and changing schools districts. The pressure is on at this age to fit in. Whoever said your teen years are your best years probably has blocked many things in their memory. Most teens are worried about fitting in, looking cool and being one of the crowd.

To fit in they often times start wanting to get tattoos, wild hair colors and hair styles or body piercing. One of the most common body piercings is the cheeks, lips or tongue. While these piercings are in vogue and by teenagers opinion, cool, do you have any idea how unsafe these piercings are to one’s health?

The risks involved with oral piercings are numerous. Just off the top of the list are chipped or cracked teeth. Then the more serious problems that can occur are blood clots and blood poisoning. Blood clots and blood poisoning can lead to brain abscess, heart infections, receding gums, scar tissue or trigeminal neuralgia (nerve disorders).

The human mouth holds millions of bacterium, and infection from that bacteria is the most common complication from having an oral piercing such as on the tongue. It is not unheard of for your tongue to swell so much that your airway is cut off.

Other symptoms that are common after having any part of your oral area pierced is infection, gum injury, saliva increased and overall pain. If the needle hits a blood vessel or nerve bundle, anyh the bleeding can be challenging to control not to mention the permanent nerve damage that may result from blood vessels or nerve bundles being punctured by the needle.

At Berkshire Dental Group, we understand that teens want to fit in during these non-fitting years of maturing. We’ve all been through it, even the kids that you thought were the coolest, all together kid, has their own insecurities.

However, when you teen comes to you about getting a body piercing in the oral area – don’t just say no. Explain these possible complication with them and if like most teens, they aren’t listening to mom or dad, make an appointment with us. Our staff at Berkshire Dental Group will discuss this decision with them and talk to them about the dangers and possible complications as well as the decisions they make today today can affect them later in life.

Your child’s dental health is our concern just as it is yours!

You Don’t Have To Floss Anymore!

A Waterpik is a water flosser that shoots a stream of water into your mouth, It is a dental instrument to use at home for individuals who want to clean their teeth and gums in between regular visits at Berkshire Dental Group. It is just as an important role in taking care of oral health and hygiene as brushing your teeth but should not replace brushing and flossing completely.

When you eat, the debris from food can accumulate in between teeth and gum lines and a Waterpik reaches spaces between gums and teeth that the toothbrush and even floss can miss. A Waterpik knocks that debris out with high pressured water stream and is an extra step of keeping your mouth clean and fresh as well as reduce the chance of cavities, plaque and other dental complications.

Waterpik is fun to use and more people will use a Waterpik compared to flossing because of that. The device fits in the fingers easily and can be turned inside mouth without any fear of getting stuck between your teeth. For many, the Waterpik motivates people to clean their mouth daily, rather than skip cleaning due to laziness. While here at Berkshire Dental Group we encourage you to continue twice a day brushing and flossing the old way, a Waterpik is better than nothing at all.

You can reduce the strength of water in a Waterpik if you are experiencing tooth sensitivity or increase the strength if there is something stuck between your gums and teeth. Waterpik Water Flossers are good for treating gum diseases, Using Waterpik Water Flossers can help individuals get strong and healthy gums that they always wanted.

Flossing becomes difficult for those wearing braces. Waterpik on the other hand offers huge respite to those wearing braces. Crowns, implants, veneers and other dental fixtures increase the risk of getting plaque or food stuck inside teeth allowing bacteria to grow if not rinsed properly. You can effectively get your teeth and gums cleaned with Waterpik and do not stay under the fear of damage.

Waterpik products are available in various online stores, selecting one that will suit your individual needs. It is advised by Berkshire Dental Group to follow the necessary tips and techniques suggested by the manufacturer.

If you aren’t sure of which Waterpik model is best for you and your family, your next visit to Berkshire Dental Group ask us for a recommendation. We want to see your smiling face here just as often, but if a Waterpik sounds like something you may use more readily than flossing, we’re glad to give you guidance in selecting one.
