What Is IV Sedation?

IV stands for intravenous, which essentially means through the veins. In this case, IV sedation means inserting an IV, which is a thin plastic tube, into a vein. Once there, we can administer a sedative directly into your bloodstream. Within just a minute or so, the powerful medication will help you feel extremely relaxed and calm, easing even the most nervous patients.
The IV stays in throughout your treatment. Our experienced team will keep a close eye on your breathing and heart rate. We’re able to adjust your level of sedation at any time to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. In the meantime, you’ll be feeling so comfortable and at-ease you aren’t likely to feel us working at all! Some patients even drift off to sleep, but it’s important to note that IV sedation does not “knock you out”. We will be able to ask you simple questions and give easy instructions. However, you aren’t likely to remember anything from your time in the dental chair aside from relaxing.
Who Is a Good Candidate for IV Sedation?

Our dentists may recommend IV sedation for more serious cases of dental phobia and for complex or lengthy procedures. While IV sedation is typically a good choice for most patients, we need to make sure it is the best choice for your situation. That’s why we ask for a full medical history and your background with anesthesia and sedatives.
If we find that you are a good candidate for this treatment, we will go over everything you can expect when it comes to preparing and recovering from your appointment. Please keep in mind that unlike with nitrous oxide sedation, the effects of IV sedation will linger for several hours after your appointment. You will need to make arrangements to have someone else take you home, where you should plan on spending the remainder of the day resting and recovering.
The Benefits of IV Sedation

IV dental sedation is not recommended to all patients or for all situations. After all, it is the most powerful form of sedation we offer, and in some cases nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation would serve you better. That being said, IV sedation offers several important benefits for patients who are good candidates for it, including:
- Powerful and reliable anxiety reduction
- Minimized discomfort in the mouth during procedures
- Minimized discomfort due to long periods of sitting in the dental chair or holding your mouth open
- Helping our team work faster and more efficiently to complete your treatment
